LOWER SALFORD — Dan Covolesky, race director of the first 9/11 Heroes Run — Harleysville, will utilize the event to honor the memory of a childhood friend and fellow U.S. Marine killed more than 20 years ago during an attempted robbery.

Pfc. Ian Dietrich — a graduate of Upper Moreland High School stationed at the Naval Air Station in Millington, Tennessee — was fatally shot on Sept. 29, 1990, in a park in downtown Memphis, according to Covolesky.

Dietrich was 19 years old. “Considering the time and place in my life, I thought it was time to pay him some respect,” said Covolesky, an officer with the Lower Salford Township Police Department.

The Harleysville Insurance Co., located at 335 Maple Ave., will host the township’s initial 5K race, kids fun run and 9/11 anniversary memorial. The events will commence at 3 p.m. Sept. 11.

Twenty-one years have come and gone since that fateful night of Sept. 29, 1990, at a riverfront park in Memphis, Tenn. Hatboro’s Ian Dietrich, a 1989 Upper Moreland graduate who was only seven months into his Marines career, was with two other friends, including Lance Cpl. David Williams of Upper Moreland. They had little money, and payday wasn’t till the following week. So they walked to the park.

Hell, Kirk Cameron Christian polemics are more competent pieces of filmmaking than this: cobbled together like a series of disjointed vignettes with little sense of directional flow, buffering scenes with an over-reliance on fadeouts and static establishing shots, schizophrenic pacing, an intrusive score that sometimes drowns out dialogue. Yes, I enjoyed myself far more than I probably should have watching – make that gawking - at this seething cauldron of inept comic intensity.

This is the story of David Washington, a highly intelligent, incredibly wealthy, self-made Memphis businessman. He's also a paranoid, misogynistic control freak on the verge of violence. If you break any of the ridiculous “10 Commandments” he expects any woman in a relationship with him to abide by, he won’t hesitate to dress you down like you’re teenager being grounded. If he suspects you're cheating on him, he'll bust out a UV light and inspect the house for semen stains not his. If he's sure you're cheating or just wants to get a troublemaker out of his life, throats are getting choked and brake lines are getting cut.

The opening shot is nothing more than David Washington shaving and brushing his teeth with this mean gleam in his eye as if he's ready to punch a hole in somebody's face. That Cordell Moore is a stage actor making his screen debut might explain why there's something very theatrical about his overacting as if he's performing for the people seated in the back of the theater.

David is engaged to Robin (the lovely Essence Atkins). How this older man hooked up with this younger, sexier woman is very easy to understand -- he's loaded. Why this younger, sexier woman is willing to put up with David's rigid rules is also easy to understand -- he's loaded. She hates David's demanding ways but is not accustomed to having to fend for herself and enjoys the lifestyle he affords her. She's an insecure gold digger, and in this movie's bizarro world mentality that actually makes her the sympathetic heroine.

At 12:16 pm today the sun's (direct) rays will fall on the Tropic of Cancer, reaching as far north as they ever get during the year. Yes, in theory today is the best day of the year to get a suntan (or burn). That won't be a problem today.

Lightning Is Sexist. “Nearly eighty-five percent of lightning victims are male, and this has been true since we began keeping records in 1959 – so it’s especially important that we teach young men to make wise decisions during thunderstorms.

As June marks the official start of the 2011 hurricane season, ServiceMaster Clean franchises across the nation stand ready to assist storm victims contain and reduce water damage. In addition to the list of 12 helpful tips on how to mitigate water damage on its Web site, http://www.800respond.com/Tips/ , the company suggests several things you should do to prepare before extreme weather hits your home.

Secure a community hurricane preparedness plan through your local emergency management office or Red Cross chapter and make sure to fill your gas tanks, as you may have to travel long distances inland to find a hotel or shelter.

Identify an out-of-state relative or friend to serve as the official family contact, and be sure all family members have this person’s contact information.

In case family members are separated from one another during a disaster (for example, when adults are at work and children are at school), identify two places to meet: one right outside your home and another outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home. Make sure everyone knows the address and phone number of your second meeting place.

WASHINGTON -- Although the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. is best remembered by the American public for fighting against racial discrimination, he was also an outspoken opponent of war and violence, most notably of the war in Vietnam. A top Obama administration official at the Department of Defense, however, argued Thursday that if King were alive, he would understand and perhaps even support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

At a Pentagon commemoration of King's accomplishments, DOD General Counsel Jeh Johnson suggested that today's wars are in line with the reverend's teachings.

Perhaps the more tragic recognition of reality took place when it became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the poor at home.

This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice, and love.

On the last day of the year, we would like to say goodbye to those artists who left us this past year. Here, a roll call of some of the notable people in art and popular culture who died in 2010.

Marlene Neubauer-Woerner , born Marlene Woerner (August 25, 1918 – January 1, 2010), was a German sculptor. She was born in Landshut, Germany.

In 1932, after the death of both parents, she attended the state school for ceramics in Landshut and completed her Master's degree in ceramics when she was only 17 years old. She began her studies of sculpture in 1936 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under the guidance of Josef Henselmann and Richard Knecht. At the academy she was the first woman to study sculpture for use with public buildings. Since 1945 Marlene Neubauer-Woerner has lived and worked as a freelance sculptor, based in Munich. From 1952 she has been a member of the Sezession, an association of artists in Munich and from 1958 a member of GEDOK, a German group of women artists. In 1978 she was honoured with the Schwabinger Kunstpreis (Art Prize) and in 1984 she received the Bavarian Order of Merit. She was a guest of honour at the Villa Massimo, Rome, in 1987. The cities of Cologne, Vienna, Paris and Athens have honoured her with their medals. She died on January 1, 2010 in Munich.

Richard Kindleberger was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1943, and raised in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He had one sister and two brothers. His father, Charles P. Kindleberger, was an economist at M.I.T. and an architect of the Marshall Plan. In 1960, Richard graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. He developed an interest for languages and learned Russian, French, German, and Spanish.
